When I was a child, I used to think that they shot the next episode of a TV show after the previous one aired. Not understanding things like time zones, I used to think, that they would start writing the next one, after I'd just watched one. I used to think that Brandon, Kelly and Steve had to learn their lines in a day, and then be on stage the day after. I used to think: "Man! That must be really hard!".
Then I started thinking about cartoons. I couldn't understand how they could animate 20 minutes in a couple of days (obviously it could only be ONE guy working on it, because all the drawings looked the same, right?).
Then one day I realized that that is how South Park ACTUALLY do it. So, you know, full circle I guess...

The weirdest thing about southpark is that the entire thing is done within autodesk maya, a 3d package.

Yeah - but it's actually super easy to do 2d in 3d programs - arguably more so than in flash fx

While the modelling, texturing, lighting part would indees be easy. The Character Rigs are surprisingly complicated for what are basically cutouts.

That's true. I haven't actually tried it myself, but I know a couple of guys working in advertising (I know, I know - they're going to hell), who do all their 2D in 3D programs. The reason being, that they can do pans and sweeps, simply by "turning" a 2D surface, rather than having to draw up a complicated flash morph. Also, like me, they think flash have a pretty annoying layout. It's kinda badly set up for what is, essentially, some fairly simple tasks. Some of Adobes programs are just not that user friendly.

Well, that's the easy answer! Although I suspect it might have something to do with the kind of person you become, when you have a life-long, unquenchable thirst for attention.
